SafeGuard Sign&Crypt for Outlook

The Secure Way of Signing and Encrypting your E-Mails

SafeGuard Sign&Crypt is the electronic alternative to a signed letter sent to the addressee in a sealed envelope. Seamlessly integrated into Microsoft Outlook 97/2000, it offers an easy to use way to encrypt and electronically sign any e-mail and attached file.

The Challenge

Digital signatures are a vital requirement for secure business transactions in our age of digital communications. Utimaco Safeware is aware of this challenge and follows the latest initiatives of the European Commission to provide a common framework for digital signatures. With SafeGuard Sign&Crypt, Utimaco Safeware offers a solution, which is tailored exactly to meet the goals of this initiative.

The Product

SafeGuard Sign&Crypt is an advanced security solution for PC users, which provides all means for secure and authentic exchange of a document or e-mail while maintaining confidentiality all along the network path from the sender to the recipient. For this purpose, SafeGuard Sign&Crypt allows adding a digital signature to e-mails as well as attached files and provides encryption for secure data transmission.

Familiar operating Environment
In order to use the functionality of SafeGuard Sign&Crypt, the user does not need to leave the operating environment he is used to. E-mails may be signed and encrypted simply by mouse click. The solution is fully integrated into Microsoft Outlook and can be administered from within Outlook.

Hardware and Software

In order to achieve a maximum level of security, SafeGuard Sign&Crypt is based on a combined hard- and software solution, which consists of a signature component, a verification component and - optional - a SafeGuard SmartCard and the smart card reader CardMan. Digital signing is done via the signature component, while the verification component takes care of the authenticity of the signature.

Multiple Signatures

Documents often have to be signed by two individuals (four-eyes principle) to be legally valid. SafeGuard Sign&Crypt fully supports such a policy. It also supports hierarchical signature structures, meaning a person within the organization may sign an e-mail including the signature of previous signers.

Characteristics

SafeGuard Sign&Crypt is based upon accepted encryption technologies and standard protocols. SafeGuard Sign&Crypt is already in use at numerous administrative, governmental and financial institutions.

World Standard Security

To achieve utmost data security, SafeGuard Sign&Crypt uses S/MIME v2 as the standard protocol for all security operations. The protocols MTT v1/v2 used by the German authorities are also supported. The solution supports multiple key pairs for each encryption and signature. These key pairs can be generated locally and sent to a TTP for certificate generation and publication in X.509.

Effective Encryption

SafeGuard Sign&Crypt supports highly effective encryption algorithms, such as single DES, triple DES (168 bit), RC2 (40, 64 and 128 bit), SHA-1, MD-5, RIPMED-160, and RSA, which guarantee a high-level of data security.

Signature via Smartcard

The private key of the user can be stored either in local software token or on the SafeGuard SmartCard. A PIN code for the latter strictly protects the confidentiality of this private key. Using a smart card provides a higher level of security than a software token, since in this case the private key never leaves the card. The misuse of stolen or lost keys can be prevented by using a certificate revocation list (CRL).

Secure Key
The user receives his key pair, certificate and SafeGuard SmartCard (optionally) from the SafeGuard PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) of Utimaco Safeware. Alternatively, SafeGuard Sign&Crypt also accepts third-party PKIs.
